FBFF: One-Time Use

This month’s Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is about the one-time use phenomenon. Katy Rose of Modly Chic talked about reading a number of posts lately about only wearing something once and how many bloggers are accused of this, so she decided to make it this month’s topic.

1. Are you a one-time wearer?

Nope. I can’t afford to be! Plus when you buy something you love, you definitely want to wear it more than once!

2. Do you feel the need to purchase something new for an evening out or a special event?

Not necessarily. It’s always nice to purchase a new dress or shoes or whatever, but I (honestly) have a ridiculous amount of formal dresses. A friend and I are planning to dress up in them (just for the heck of it) and go out to dinner sometime soon.

3. Re-mixing is something a lot of bloggers are proud of being able to accomplish – are you a re-mixing pro or do you shy away from posting items frequently? Why?

I don’t really call it re-mixing so much as being a normal person. Most people don’t have unlimited clothing items to wear, so they “re-mix” their wardrobe to come up with new outfits. I do tend to shy away from posting the same item too many items in a row though–I tend to get fixated on one item in my closet and re-mix the crap out of it before moving on to something else. I’m trying to avoid doing that, or at least posting those outfits farther apart.

4. Do you have a clothing budget or are you an impulse buyer?

I am a horrible horrible impulse buyer. I tend to shop on a whim and then just purchase something. I usually eye tons of things online, but always end up impulsively spending my money in stores.

5. Do you find yourself bored when reading a blog in which clothing items are often remixed and appear frequently?

No! I love blogs that remix items. If I have similar items in my closet, it always helps to see what they paired their cropped jacket with, so I can figure what to pair mine with!

We Call This: It’s 4 AM and I Have To Work

We call this outfit “I had to wake up at 4 am to get to work, and it’s cold outside.” I’m pretty sure you can tell I’ve given up here because that gigantic knit thing is always a clear indicator that I’m not trying. It’s essentially a gigantic blanket that I only wear when I’m utterly and completely exhausted.

I ended up getting off work, and having to go to Verizon Wireless where I sat for 1.5 hours while they wiped my mom’s old Blackberry and transferred my phone to it. Basically, my phone began to have to battery of an iPhone without any of the perks so I was charging it 3 times a day and it was still always on the verge of death. At least I’ll be using Twitter more frequently?

It was only when I finally got home at 2pm that I was able to eat and take outfit pictures. Hence why I look tired, grumpy, and really really unkempt.

This is generally why most of outfit posts consist of my days off from work.

Outfit Details: Knit: Charter Club; Sweater: Target; Skirt: Laundry by Shelli Segal, thrifted; Shoes: Shellys London, via Modcloth.com.

Originally, it was just the sweater and the skirt but it didn’t look finished to me. So I threw this knit thing over, and I felt like it looked a little better.  I was also lazy, and didn’t feel much like jewelry.

Also, I’m really loving the sunshine that Washington State is getting lately! It’s been wonderful outside.

These are one of my all time favorite pairs of shoes. The pink bows always lift my mood.

Also it was completely unintentional, but i love that I matched my nail polish to my outfits. Essie’s Chincilly is my new favorite nail color.

Just Like Jam & Bread

Outfit Details: Dress: Darling UK, via Saisons Boutique; Leather Jacket: Jean Paul Gaultier for Target, via Ebay; Shoes: Madden Girl, gift.

I’ve envisioned this outfit for quite awhile. When I bought the dress, I pictured it with this jacket (Also, new goal: wear this jacket way more frequently). The only thing I didn’t picture? The shoes. Kind of a problem, that. I’ll admit, I’m not pleased with the pairing of the boot. I like it in theory, just not in practice.  

Admittedly, part of the reason the boot was chosen was because it is close toed, and my toes were in dire need of a new coat of nail polish.

Also, I saw The Hunger Games over the weekend! I was so excited to be in the theater watching Katniss, Peeta, and my favorite character: Rue. I thought they did a very nice job with the movie and I can’t wait for the next movie to come out.

Banned

While playing Truth or Dare with a friend of mine the other day, he dared me to stop shopping for 3 months. The last time I tried to ban myself from shopping… I failed miserably. So this is going to be incredibly difficult.  However, according to the (arbitrary) rules he made I am allowed $10/week to do with what I see fit. The next time I will be able to shop (fully) will be June 22 (I wince as I write that). However, it should give me ample time with my current wardrobe.

I ended up wearing this outfit to the grocery store. You know how when you’re banned from something it makes you want to do it more? So I went and bought groceries because it was like shopping. Can we say “issues”?

These gold sandals are going to be a staple in the summer! With the weather warming up (it was super sunny and warm today), I’m excited to start wearing them regularly.

As for the necklaces–I enjoyed layering. I could have added another one, but it just seemed like too many at that point! And, although you can’t see it, I was actually wearing gold eyeliner to tie it all together.

I was tagged by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey for the “11 random things” post. So here it goes!

The rules:

Me with a wall in Bellingham (circa 2010). This is likely the most normal “out and about” picture I have. Most of the pictures I take tend to be really hilarious in a crazy way.

11 Random Things:

1. I have never had the chicken pox.

2. I’m obsessed with oral hygiene. I have drawer in my bathroom dedicated to stuff just for my teeth (floss, toothpaste, picks, those tablets that dentists give you, whitening strips, all sort of teeth stuff).

3. I rode horses for 10 years. The first two years were Western, the others were English. I rode in A, B, and C circuit shows in Washington, Oregon, and Canada.

4.  One of my front teeth has a chip in it. The dentist has filed it down before, but it always comes back. I’ve given up on making it go away!

5. I wake up at 4AM on the days I have to open at my new job.

6. I absolutely love Greek mythology. I’ve read so much Greek Myth it’s crazy! I’ll also watch (and critique) any movie/tv show/whatever with a Greek Myth theme.

7.  I minored in Women’s Studies during college.

8. I purchased my first designer piece when I was 16 on my first trip to Nordstroms. A pair of Michael by Michael Kors shoes.

9.  One of my ears is allergic to most metals.

10. When I get bored or feel the urge, I read tarot cards. I own 4 different tarot decks.

11. I always carry a water bottle with me. My car is like a water bottle graveyard! I have about 15 empty ones rattling around in the backseat!

Salazar’s 11 Questions:

1. If you could travel back in time, when/where would you go? Ancient Greece/Rome. I’ve always wanted to go to Greece and see the ruins (someday), I’d love to see them when they weren’t ruins.

2. How did you come up with your blog’s name? I originally had a different name, but I ended up thinking for a couple months before coming up with Literature & Lace–two of my favorite things. :)

3. Favorite era in fashion? I love the silhouettes of the 50′s. I find them incredibly flattering. Otherwise, I’m disturbingly fond of the 80′s.

4. What was the first movie you saw in the theater? Did you love it, hate it? Erm. I actually have no memory of the first movie I saw in theaters. Whatever it was, I probably liked it though!

5. How would you survive a zombie apocalypse? Screaming? Actually, I’d probably run away very quickly and hide. Or latch onto a group of people who could actually kill zombies, and then if it looked they were about to be overtaken/killed I’d just run off.

6. What is the weirdest thing you ever ate? Did you like it? I tried eel once! It wasn’t awful, but it certainly isn’t something I plan to try again.

7. Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter? Harry Potter. Hands down.

8. What have you done that you are most proud of? I suppose earning a college degree? Although I am really proud of myself for sticking to the diet/exercise plan and losing the weight I did in a healthy way.

9. To quote Garden State, is there any normal kid thing you kinda wish you missed? (chicken pox, braces, finding out there’s no Santa? – though if you missed this I would be a bit worried ) I wish I’d missed that really bad haircut thing that it seems every kid goes through. Some of my kid pictures are just awful.

10. Who is your favorite author? Vladmir Nabokov. Lolita is my all time favorite novel, and I’m over 1/2 way through Ada right now.

11. Quick, start your music player of choice (Spotify, Pandora, Window Media Player, iTunes, iPod, Walkman, I don’t care). What is the first song on your playlist? “Domino” by Jessie J.

Sandal Weather

Outfit Details: Dress: Monteau, via Rock It Roost; Shoes: K-mart.

Something about sunshine makes you feel as if you need to be wearing sandals. The past couple Washington days have been very nice! Chilly in the mornings, but spring-like in the afternoons: a welcome change from the usual rain.

I purchased this dress awhile ago, when my friend convinced me to go in the store. I told her if I tried on this dress, I’d be bringing it home. I tried it on and… here it is.  I suppose now the real question is what else will I pair it with?

I snagged these gold sandals from K-marts kid section awhile ago when I still lived in Bellingham. I love how unique they are, you never see anything this much fun in the adult area.

Marooned

Outfit Details: Dress: Darling UK, via Saisons Boutique; Socks: Tabbi Socks, via ModSock Boutique; Shoes: Stolen from Mom.

While I was in Bellingham, I finally went to the store a friend of mine raved about. It was store full of socks. Just socks. They had knee highs, over the knees, ankle socks… You could get socks with unicorns, gnomes, fish, cats, words (I was partial to the “bookworm” socks), or just stripes.

I ended up finding these maroon/wine over-the-knee socks there. I’ve always had the hardest time finding over-the-knee socks in stores, so to find a gigantic selection was kind of overwhelming. I only ended up buying this pair for now, though I plan to make a trip back to the store.

 This lace dress is a major wardrobe staple of mine. I’m pretty sure it goes with everything I own. I’ve actually written down over 20 outfits involving this dress. Now, I’ve just got to start putting them into play.

Gradients

Outfit Details: Blazer: Ann Taylor, thrifted; Shirt: Target; Pants: Gap; Shoes: TJ Maxx

To my utter joy, I finally found the perfect white t-shirt at Target. I’ve been looking for a white t-shirt for ages, and when I saw they had a pile I tried on as many as I could find. This one was the clear winner.

Pairing it with this pink jacket made me think of my pink pants (which I haven’t worn in awhile), but obviously the pants are a little darker than the jacket. This was an opportunity for a gradient. So I put on red shoes and a light pink necklace and thus was pleased with the final outcome.

I feel like I’ve been wearing outfits that don’t have a great amount of bright color recently, so this is a nice change of pace.

This post is a little late mostly because my morning was filled with working out, and the weekend set me back immune-system-wise so I slept for 15 hours yesterday!

Lucky

Outfit Details: Jacket (old): Lucky Brand; Dress: Target; Socks: Forever 21; Flats: Ross.

For the weekend I fully meant to schedule posts but unfortunately it ended up not happening. I ended up visiting Bellingham, and ended up running very behind when I ran into I-have-nothing-to-wear syndrome (As an aside, I still can’t believe this happens to me. Ever). So hopefully St. Patty’s Day went well for everyone! Everything should settle down now, so I should be back to regular postings soon enough.

This is what I wore on the ride back from Bellingham. This dress is comfy and striped and I’ve been wanting to pair it with this jacket forever. I planned to add my red heels to this, but I had to walk up and down a couple flights of cobble-stone-y stairs so I switched it for flats. Safety over fashion, in this case.

Also: always wear shorts under your dresses and skirts! My friend warned me that some guy checked me out as I was climbing the three flights of stairs.

 I’m working my way through my jackets one by one. This denim jacket I’ve owned since high school. I tend to think it looks best when paired with dresses or skirts because a denim jacket with jeans is a bit too much denim for my tastes.
